Vanadium - Benefits, Deficiency Symptoms And Food Sources

What is Vanadium ?

Vanadium is a trace mineral that is needed by the human body in small amounts. It is commonly found in vegetables and seafood. The presence of vanadium in the brain inhibits cholesterol from forming in the blood vessels. Vanadium is active in many chemical reactions that take place in the body. Vanadium containing compounds have also recently been indicated in their ability to help promote healthy cellular replication in the body.

Uses and Benefits of Vanadium

Vanadium inhibits cholesterol formation in the blood vessels. Vanadium is needed for cellular metabolism and for the formation of bones and teeth. It plays a role in growth and reproduction, and inhibits cholesterol synthesis. Vanadium has been shown to have the ability to improve insulin utilization, resulting in improved glucose tolerance. When used in combination with Chromium , it is found to be beneficial in dealing with mineral deficiencies found in diabetics and those with hypoglycemia .

Recommended Dosage of Vanadium

There is no established RDA for vanadium. General recommendations are 20-30 mcg per day.

Deficiency Symptoms of Vanadium .

A vanadium deficiency may be linked to cardiovascular and kidney disease, impaired reproductive ability, and increased infant mortality. Vanadium is not easily absorbed. Athletes may require more of this trace mineral than non athletes. Some symptoms of a vanadium deficiency are :-

  • Diabetes.
  • High cholesterol.
  • Obesity.
  • Hypoglycemia.

Rich Food Sources of Vanadium

Vanadium is found in dill, fish, olives, meat, radishes, snap beans, vegetable oils, and whole grains.

Cautions and side effects of Vanadium

There may be an interaction between vanadium and chromium. If you take supplemental chromium and vanadium, take them at different times. Tobacco use decreases the uptake of vanadium.
